1917 was a year of crisis that saw nations and their armed forces across Europe struggling to cope with the demands of The Great War. Peace movements and hopes for a diplomatic solution waned as the cost already paid in human life made absolute victory the only acceptable outcome.
In April the USA entered the war after plans of German support for a Mexican invasion of America were intercepted. German aircraft made the first daylight air raid on London in June causing 500 casualties. The following month TE Lawrence (of Arabia) and his allies were victorious at Aqaba. The Russian revolution began in November whilst British troops entered Jerusalem in December.
These stamp cards carry images of the six special stamps as a reminder to the stark reality of the First World War. Each of the six cards carries an image of one of the six special stamps released a century after 1917. The designs on the cards include:
