Glasgow 2014 was the third time Scotland had hosted the Commonwealth Games, and the third time that coins had been struck to honour the Games, one of the largest sporting events in the world.
The Glasgow 2014 50p was the first legal tender sporting themed coin since the Olympic Games of London 2012 – and an official Glasgow 2014 product. The bold and dynamic coin design by new coin designer Alex Loudon captures the spirit of Glasgow 2014 and the Commonwealth Games, featuring the Scottish Saltire along with a cyclist and an athlete, the lettering inspired by the work of a hero of Glasgow, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Only 2,500 collectors, visitors to the Games or international enthusiasts will be able to secure one of these limited edition coins presented in a display case and completed with Certificate of Authenticity and a booklet exploring the story behind Glasgow 2014.
