On November 20th 2017 Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh mark their Platinum Wedding Anniversary, a truly unique milestone in both their personal and the nation’s lives. It will be 70 years since the royal couple were married at Westminster Abbey in a grand ceremony attended by 2,000 guests and broadcast by radio to over 200 million listeners. As the first Royal event since World War II ended, the wedding was a countrywide celebration in the midst of rationing and recovery from the war years.
The Queen first met her future husband when she was 13 years old at the wedding of his cousin, Princess Marina of Greece. After falling for him during a visit to the Royal Naval College in 1939 she kept in touch with the 18-year-old naval midshipman, corresponding with him during her teenage years as he completed his service at sea during World War II.
King George VI gave the couple permission to wed in April 1947. Philip proposed to Elizabeth during a stroll around the gardens of Balmoral. He gave Elizabeth a platinum engagement ring with a large square diamond at its centre and smaller diamonds on each side.
The Royal Wedding Platinum Anniversary Presentation Pack features six special stamps with images recording Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s engagement, wedding and honeymoon. Written by royal correspondent Robert Hardyman this presentation pack features a description of the wedding and is accompanied by a wealth of archival imagery. The six special stamps are presented over a background image showing the detail of Princess Elizabeth’s wedding dress which was designed by Norman Hartnell.
