1916 was the year of the evacuation from Gallipoli which saw 80,000 allied troops retreat after the ill-fated attempt to knock Turkey out of the war. Conscription was introduced as law in Britain for the first time to ensure enough soldiers were available. It was the year of the Battle of Jutland which saw over 250 warships do battle off the coast of Denmark, the Royal Navy ultimately winning the battle at great cost, maintaining their rule of the North Sea. The Battle of the Somme, one of bloodiest events in human history with over a million casualties began in July 1916.
