Piers, Proms and Pavilions Stamp Cover featuring 6 Special Stamps - BC512

Celebrating the evolution of the seaside town through structures from varying architectural styles

Here at the Post Office Shop, we have a large range of collectible coins and special stamps available which celebrate a wide selection of events and themes. Within this range is the Piers, Proms and Pavilions Stamp Cover.

Cancelled on the first day of issue with a specially designed Southend on Sea postmark, this stunning stamp cover also features the six special stamps from the Seaside Architecture stamp release in September and a beautiful image of Southend Pier.

Sir John Betjeman once said "The Pier is Southend, Southend is the Pier" and it's as true today as it was when it first welcomed visitors all those years ago.

If you walk along Southend on Sea's High Street, towards the sea, your eye will be drawn in a straight line towards the longest pleasure pier in the world. Standing for over a century, it extends 2158 metres (1.34 miles or 2360 yards) into the Thames Estuary, and is a well loved symbol of Southend and the pleasures of the English seaside.

The Southend Pier Railway is a narrow gauge railway which runs the length of Southend Pier. Although once electrified, the train service is currently provided by two diesel trains, running on 3ft narrow gauge track. Each train consists of a diesel hydraulic locomotive at the southern end, five trailer coaches and at the northern end, a driver control unit with passenger space. One train is named Sir John Betjeman, and the other Sir William Heygate.

The National Pier Society

The National Piers Society was founded in 1979 under Sir John Betjeman, at a time when some of the finest piers were threatened with demolition. Over the years the Society has grown steadily and has become well established as the leading authority on piers. Through its efforts, several piers that would otherwise have vanished remain for the enjoyment of everyone.

The Society's aims are to promote and sustain interest in the preservation and continued enjoyment of seaside piers. It publishes a guide to British Piers and a quarterly magazine, and advised heritage bodies, lottery boards, local authorities and the media on pier matters.

The seaside structures featured on these special stamps are:

  • Eastbourne Bandstand
  • Tinside Lido
  • Bangor Pier
  • Southwold Lighthouse
  • Blackpool Pleasure Beach
  • Bexhill on Sea Shelter
