Hampton Court Palace is one of the best known and grandest buildings in Britain. An historic attraction for almost 200 years, the palace is linked to the Tudor king Henry VIII. In 1838, Queen Victoria opened it to visitors. This Hampton Court Palace Presentation Pack forms part of the Royal Palaces series following the 2014 Buckingham Palace and 2017 Windsor Castle issues.

The Hampton Court Presentation Pack looks back through history. The inner of the pack explores Hampton Court in its Tudor period, when Henry VIII and his six wives held court there. The Outer of the pack focusses on the reconstruction of the palace in a Baroque style during the reign of William III and Mary II, through to Queen Victoria gifting it to the nation in 1838.

This Hampton Court Palace Presentation Pack includes all 6 special stamps along with the miniature sheet which features a further four special stamps on a specially designed carrier card design based on the ground floorplan of the palace.

The six special stamps in this issue are:

  • 1st Class South Front - Built for William III and Mary II by Sir Christopher Wren, the South Front overlooks the Privy Garden
  • 1st Class West Front - The grand Tudor architecture of Wolsey’s Great Gatehouse is a notable feature of the West Front.
  • 1st Class East Front - Designed in the same Baroque style as the South Front, the East Front overlooks the Great Fountain Garden.
  • £1.55 Pond Gardens - The pools in these gardens originally held freshwater fish, such as carp, which were eaten at Tudor banquets
  • £1.55 Maze - Hampton Court Palace’s Maze was planted in the late 17th century and is the world’s oldest hedge maze.
  • £1.55 Great Fountain Garden - This ornate garden was simplified by Queen Anne, who was keen to reduce expenditure on the royal gardens.
