David Bowie was a genuine chameleon, creating original music and innovative stage shows. This Presentation Pack explores his career and creativity, from his early influences to the jazz-inspired rock of his final opus, Blackstar.
David Robert Jones was born in Brixton, South London on 8th January 1947. Six years later, his family moved to the suburbs of Bromley in Kent which is where it all started. Like many other youngsters of his generation, David was soon making music of his own after hearing the new sounds that were making waves from across the Atlantic in America. Moving from one band and sound to another, David reached a milestone in 1965 when to avoid confusion with The Monkees’ member Davy Jones, the young singer changed his name to David Bowie. Continuing to develop his music and learn from others, it wasn’t until 1969 that David Bowie made his commercial breakthrough, going to number five in the UK with his hit, lsquo;Space Oddity’.
He continued to make song after song but it wasn’t until 1972 when he made a performance on Top of the Pops (6th July) that changed his fortune forever and made him stand out yet again. The single was lsquo;Starman’ and the album was The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. This was the turning point of his career. His subject matter remained remarkably consistent from 1967’s David Bowie to 2016’s Blackstar; he sang songs about loneliness, spirituality, disconnection and death.
The six Special Stamps included within the Presentation Pack feature iconic album covers from throughout David Bowie’s career.
There is also a Miniature Sheet that features four Special Stamps from live shows including the Ziggy Stardust Touch and A Reality Tour. The backdrop on the Miniature Sheet is taken from the Glass Spider Tour. His music was entwined not only with his trailblazing videos but also his outstanding stage performances on tour.
