This Red Arrows Miniature Sheet features four special stamps and has been released as part of the range to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force and pays tribute not only to the significant part it has played in British military history but also to its ongoing role of protecting the country and its interests, providing humanitarian assistance and saving lives.
The Red Arrows demonstrate the excellence and capabilities of the Royal Air Force and the service’s skilled and talented people. The team of one hundred and twenty includes pilots, engineers and essential support staff and competition to join is fierce. The first public display by the Red Arrows was at RAF Biggin Hill in 1965. Initially equipped with the Folland Gnat they switched to the BAE Systems Hawk in 1980. Selected from fast jet squadrons the pilots spend three years with the team, after each tour the pilots return to front line or instructional squadrons.
Based at RAF Scampton the Red Arrows display team are recognised as one of the world’s premier aerobatic teams and the four stamps in this issue each feature one of the teams key maneuvers. The stamps comprise:
