The RAF Centenary Framed Red Arrows Miniature Sheet N3121 commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force and pays tribute not only to the significant part it has played in British military history but also to its ongoing role of protecting the country and its interests, providing humanitarian assistance and saving lives. It also highlights the bravery and heroism of its personnel and the innovation and technological advancement that has helped make the RAF the envy of the world.

This RAF Centenary Framed Stamp Set is handmade in the UK, and contains the Red Arrows Miniature Sheet mounted in a black ash frame (dimensions: w: 33cm x h 18cm) ideal for any wall.  The Red Arrows demonstrate the excellence and capabilities of the Royal Air Force and the service’s skilled and talented people. The team of one hundred and twenty includes pilots, engineers and essential support staff and competition to join is fierce. The first public display by the Red Arrows was at RAF Biggin Hill in 1965. Initially equipped with the Folland Gnat they switched to the BAE Systems Hawk in 1980. Selected from fast jet squadrons the pilots spend three years with the team, after each tour the pilots return to front line or instructional squadrons.

Based at RAF Scampton the Red Arrows display team are recognised as one of the world’s premier aerobatic teams and the four stamps in this issue each feature one of the teams key maneuvers.  The stamps comprise:

  • 1st Class: Flypast - The world famous flypast entrance is performed in the Big Battle formation.
  • 1st Class: Swan - For the Swan formation, the pilots use Red ` as their reference point as they ascend.
  • £1.40: Synchro - Red 6 and 7, the Synchro pair, fly past each other at an altitude of about 100 ft (30m)
  • £1.40: Python - The Enid section of the team (Reds 1-5) perform the spectacular Python.
