2014 saw the 100th anniversary of the birth of ten exceptional individuals whose achievements have each influenced their respective fields beyond measure. This Remarkable Lives War Stamp Cover BC505A features five of the ten stamps in this issue over a war time inspired painting backdrop. The five special first class stamps included in this stamp cover are:

Noor Inayat Khan was a daughter of Indian royalty and an incredible SOE Agent operating in Paris in occupied France. Khan managed to broadcast messages through to England despite the fact that her network had been infiltrated before she had even arrived. After her capture by the Gestapo, they were able to send decoy messages due to Khan’s meticulous documentation of her orders. However, Khan steadfastly refused to give any further information right up until her execution in the concentration camp in Dachau proving her a resilient and truly brave spirit.

Max Ferdinand Perutz, OM, CH, CBE, FRS was a molecular biologist, famous for winning the 1962 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with John Kendrew for their studies of the structures of hemoglobin and globular proteins.

Sir Alec Guinness CH CBE was a celebrated English actor on the stage as well as film. His most well-known roles were Col. Nicholson in lsquo; The Bridge on the River Kwai’ (1957), Prince Faisal in lsquo;Lawrence of Arabia’ (1962) and Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original Star Wars films.

Joan Littlewood was a celebrated theatre director and writer. She established the left-wing Theatre Workshop and was instrumental in cementing the reputation of the Theatre Royal in Stratford, East London.

Abram Games OBE, RDI was known as one of the best 20th-century graphic designers for his striking designs and recruitment posters during the war. He was Britain’s official war artist, creating over 100 bold and inspiring posters.
