Here at the Post Office Shop, we have a large range of collectible coins and stamps which commemorate a wide range of sporting events; this Celebrating Jimmy Greaves Cover is the perfect way to remember an English footballing great.
2013 saw the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Football Association back in 1863, together with 140 years of the Scottish Football Association. Royal Mail celebrated the event with the issue of 11 very special stamps which represent some of the greatest British footballers to have ever played the beautiful game; all of whom have been inducted into the National Football Museums Hall of Fame.
To coincide with the issue, Buckingham Covers have produced the Football Heroes - Celebrating Jimmy Greaves Cover which features five of the eleven unique Football Heroes stamps; with the cover dedicated to Jimmy Greaves.
Known as one of the most talented and prolific goal scorers of all time, Jimmy Greaves goal scoring record was second to none, regardless of the team he was playing for. In his debut for England, against Peru, he scored his first of a long stream of goals; eventually he netted an amazing 44 goals from 57 games, twice scoring four times in a match and netting six hat-tricks.
His success was matched at league level where he reached the milestone of 200 league goals in 1960 aged 23 years and 290 days (exactly the same age as Dixie Dean when he scored his 200th league goal). Achieving legendary status, Greaves played for Chelsea, Tottenham, Milan and West Ham. He retired at the age of 31 after registering a staggering 517 league games and 357 goals under his belt.
Cancelled with a specially designed Tottenham, London postmark on the day of issue (9th May 2013) and with Limited Stock, the Football Heroes - Celebrating Jimmy Greaves Cover is the perfect way to celebrate the success of not only the English and Scottish Football Associations, but also some iconic footballing greats.
