The perfect way to remember some iconic footballing greats.

Here at the Post Office Shop, we have a large range of collectible coins and stamps which commemorate a wide range of sporting events; this Celebrating Gordon Banks Cover is the perfect way to remember an English footballing great.

2013 saw the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Football Association back in 1863, together with 140 years of the Scottish Football Association. Royal Mail celebrated the event with the issue of 11 very special stamps which represent some of the greatest British footballers to have ever played the beautiful game; all of whom have been inducted into the National Football Museums Hall of Fame.

To coincide with the issue, Buckingham Covers have produced the Football Heroes - Celebrating Gordon Banks Cover which features six of the eleven unique Football Heroes stamps; with the cover dedicated to Gordon Banks.

Most famously remembered for his heroic role in England's triumphant 1966 World Cup campaign; culminating in a 4-2 win against West Germany at Wembley in the final (did the ball cross the line?). With 73 caps for his country, arguably his most iconic save came at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico; saving a header from the great Pele which is more commonly known as 'the save of the century'.

Outside playing for his country, Banks also enjoyed a successful club career. Spanning over three different decades, his club career included eight years at Leicester City before a five season spell with Stoke; this spell culminating with him being named Football Writers' Player of the Season for 1972, shortly after that Banks hung up his gloves at the age of 34. Although he had a great club career, he will be mostly recognised for his glowing England career.

Cancelled with a specially designed Stoke-On-Trent postmark on the day of issue (9th May 2013) and with Limited Stock, the Football Heroes - Celebrating Gordon Banks Cover is the perfect way to celebrate the success of not only the English and Scottish Football Associations, but also some iconic footballing greats.

This stamp cover also includes stamps recognising:

  • George Best - Northern Ireland: Spotted at 15 years old by Bob Bishop, a Manchester United Scout; Best went on to mesmerise fans with his impressive arsenal of footballing skills.
  • John Barnes - England: Former England and Liverpool player, described by his team mates as simply the best footballer they had played alongside
  • Dave Mackay - Scotland: Renowned for being an extremely strong, determined and hard tackling midfielder. Brian Clough called him the ideal skipper
  • Bobby Charlton - England: Stated as possibly the greatest English footballer of all time, Charlton played the majority of his football for Manchester United and England
  • Brian Robson - England: Known for his bravery and commitment, which generally ended in injury. His determination made him a natural leader for Manchester United and England.
