Stamp cover recognising some of Wales' most iconic locomotives.

Here at the Post Office Shop, we have a large range of collectibles which recognise a wide range of events and themes. New for 2014 we have a selection of items which celebrate classic locomotives of the United Kingdom. Within this selection is the Classic Locomotives of Wales Stamp Cover.

This BC503 stamp cover is part of the final instalment of this collection celebrating classic locomotives of Great Britain. The London, Midland and Scottish Railway Company was formed as a result of the enactment of the 1921 Railways Act, which grouped 115 railways into 4 main companies.

In Great Britain, the company had interests from Bournemouth to Wick and from Great Yarmouth to Afon Wen and Swansea in Wales. The LMS was the only one of the Big 4 with interests in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, making it the largest of the grouped companies. For a short time it was in fact the largest joint stock company in the world.

This beautiful stamp cover features an illustration of the LMS No.7720 locomotive drawn by highly regarded railway artist John Wigston. This stamp cover also includes elegant gold block lettering to give it an added prestige.

The Hunslet No. 589 Blanche on the Ffestiniog Railway will be featured, along with the LMS 7720 which ran between Gwynedd and Anglesey. Two other stamps feature "The Earl" steam train in Welshpool, Powys, and another pulling coal in Merthyr Tydfil.

This stamp cover features the following locomotives:

1st Cass Stamp - LMS No.7720 leaving the Brittania Bridge with a Bangor to Holyhead train in around 1930.

78p Stamp - The Hunslet No.589 Blanche rounding the curve of the cob in Porthmadog, Gwynedd in 1964.

88p Stamp - The WLLR No.822 "The Earl" in Welshpool, Powys.

£1.28 Stamp - The BR 5600 No. 5652 heading a coal train in Merthyr Tydfil in 1959.
