During the summer of 1940, with much of Europe crushed by Hitler’s Nazi forces. The Royal Air force valiantly fought against the onslaught of the Luftwaffe, the German air force. The pilots, the ldquo;few”, have been rightly recognized ever since, but there were many others, from the ground crew to the operations rooms staff to those in the aircraft factories, who all played a vital part in defending the country during the Battle of Britain.
This 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain Stamp Cover features the six special stamps, cancelled with a custom Battle of Britain, Biggin Hill postmark dated 16th July 2015. The six special stamps included are 1st class lsquo;Pilots scramble to their Hurricanes’, 1st class lsquo;Supermarine Spitfire on patrol’, 1st class lsquo;Armourer replaces ammunition boxes’, £1.33 lsquo;Spotters of the Auxiliary Territorial Service’, £1.33 lsquo;Operations room at Bentley Priory and £1.33 lsquo;Pilots of 32 Squadron await orders’.
This cover has been flown on a memorial flight organised from RAF Coningsby and has a pictorial spitfire carried cachet.
