The 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, commemorated here in this Stamp Cover, marked the final defeat of French leader and emperor Napoleon Bonaparte at the hands of the Duke of Wellington. The victory, described by the Duke as ldquo;the nearest-run thing you ever saw in your life” paved the way for decades of peace after a long period of war in Europe.

Napoleon attacked the position occupied by Wellington’s coalition forces which included some 25,000 British troops alongside Prussian, German, Dutch and Belgian soldiers but were unable to break the lines. Battle continued throughout the day until a final French assault was turned back, becoming a rout and ultimately defeat. Napoleon abdicated just four days later.

The 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo Stamp Cover includes the six special stamps from this issue: 1st Class lsquo; The Defence of Hougoumont’, 1st Class lsquo; The Scots Greys during the charge of the Union Brigade’, £1.00 lsquo; The French cavalry’s assault on Allied defensive squares’, £1.00 lsquo; The defence of La Haye Sainte by the King’s German Legion’, £1.52 lsquo; The capture of Plancenoit by the Prussians’ and £1.52 lsquo; The French Imperial Guard’s final assault’.
